To write a biography is to answer the following questions: What life juncture are you at? What has been your journey to getting there? What are you offering? Why is it unique and special?
When Tawnia e-mailed her biography for a facelift, the first thing I did was spin her experiences in a positive way and re-organize her story in an attention-grabbing manner. We are filled with accomplishments that define our journey; sometimes we just need to dig to find them.
To me, a press kit is an extension of a biography. You are still answering the same basic questions: who, what, where, when, and why? The answers are sometimes presented in the forms of graphs and tables, especially if you are writing about a corporation, but the format is the same: colorful, eye-catching, and relevant.
I received an e-mail from Eddington about his project called: The Freelancers. The project was about a group of kids trying to “make it” in L.A. Eddington had a story, some pictures, and a goal. He wanted to be able to pitch The Freelancers idea to people he knew in Hollywood. I decided that a “leave behind” would be a great tool for him to help distinguish his project from the rest. A leave behind is something you literally leave behind after your pitch. It may be a brochure about your company, it may be a reel of your work, it may be a business card, or it may be a press kit. Eddington agreed; I organized a layout, sent over some interview questions to bring more depth to his story, and created a press kit that he could print out or e-mail to people interested.© Copyright 2012 The Adventures of Hannah Concept Publishing
